This year, World College Radio Day was held on Friday October 4th. It's an annual celebration of what makes college radio special and a unique asset for academic institutions: not only as a community outreach resource, but also an an experiential learning lab for our students.
At 90.5 WERG, we like to incorporate all of the usual day-to-day activities at the radio station into College Radio WEEK. This enables us to showcase that what we are doing during this special day is the type of programming and content that is always available by tuning-in to 90.5 WERG or streaming us at wergfm.com.
On Tuesday, Khoi (our student General Manager), counted-down the Top 30 from 6-9pm.
Wednesday, we were broadcasting live on-location from the Friendship Green on West 7th Street for the annual Campus Ministry Cookout, as part of Gannon University's Unity Week. Gannon president Dr. Walter Iwanenko joined us on-air while flipping burgers for the event on a glorious Autumn afternoon.
On Thursday, The Prime Time Sports Guys dedicated a significant portion of their three-hour weekly show to Gannon soccer: chatting in-studio with several women from the team and also interviewing Coach Colin Petersen.
Friday morning - College Radio Day - began with our daily Sonic Sunrise morning show, where Jordan Saeli from the Alumni Association was on from 6-9am to talk-up the weekend's Homecoming festivities. The commercial stations in town owned by iHeart and Cumulus have all but jettisoned local content from their morning shows, and this now gives 90.5 WERG a unique edge in serving the community and showcasing the culture of Gannon University.
That evening from 6-9pm we rebroadcast a special program from Homecoming 2021: many of the original WERG alums of the 1970's had come back to campus and taken to the airwaves to share Old Radio Stories. We had recorded the original broadcast for posterity's sake and received a positive response upon its re-airing.
Saturday was the Homecoming Game: our Golden Knights hosted Seton Hill and we carried the game live on 90.5 WERG and globally at wergfm.com. We also won the game :-)
Long Live College Radio!
